Yesterday Andy’s school hosted their first Chinese new year
performance and party since before the pandemic.
We were so proud of Andy- he was much calmer and more focused than in
previous performances. And— maybe because he had the most eye-catching
red Chinese dragon sweater? — he was the main character at the climax
of the story as he walked up and down the aisle with the spot light on
him as he wished everyone good fortune in the year of the Dragon while
receiving ‘Lai See’ (the red packets of money that children receive
during the new year period)!
As is always the case at Andrew’s special needs school, the
performances are inspirational and touching— I don’t think there was a
dry eye in the room when the girl with speech impediments and mobility
challenges, recited her own poem about a world without disability
discrimination using her tablet and electric speaker (much like what
Dr. Stephen Hawking used to communicate). And I’m always reminded of
the motto at my own primary school: Every Child is Good at Something!
